  • County Business Manager

I now have worked almost four complete days in my new position as the County Business Manager for The Salvation Army in Genesee County. I have promised staff that I would not be quick to make changes in processes and procedures without first having a good understanding of what we are doing.

However, so far this has been a very hard promise to keep. We have new officers who are at the Beecher Corps who may have a misunderstanding of how things work here. They felt they needed more vehicles than they have. They did not have computers that came from their previous appointments (as is usually the case).

The Social Service staff and Development staff need to determine what their priorities are and how to go about meeting them. All of that said, I think that we will soon be on the right track. We do have a great staff in Genesee County and we will move ahead to meet the needs of those that we are here to serve. I am still working with the DHQ IT Staff just to be able to print from my computer.

We also got notice that funds that have been just flowing from the State Department of Human Services now have to be applied for. We have until July 11, 2008 to gather the information and submit the proposal for work that we have done for years.

I love my job and the challenges that it brings.

  • Monday's at The Citadel

It has been a while since I have entered anything in my xanga site. My daughter-in-law recently reminded me that I should post more regularly.

So here goes, this weekend Peg & I spent Saturday morning and early afternoon at the corps at an inductive Bible study of the covenant taught by Linda Himes, the Territorial Bible and Stewardship Consultant. She did a great job teaching this new technique of using colored pencils and various symbols to mark your Bible text in a way that is supposed to help you understand the meaning of it.

I think that I spent too much time trying to learn the method that I almost missed the point of the study. BUT, I really get the covenant relationship that we have with GOD. An unbreakable promise that he made with Abraham and his descendants that includes each of us as Christians today.

I have been thinking of ways that we can increase the number of persons that our Community Center touches via activities and programs and more importantly the number that hear the gospel message. It is tough in a downtown location with limited neighborhoods to reach out. We are looking to our location in a college town to be part of that answer. However, we need to reach out to our agency's clients who need help, also.

If  you have any suggestions how the Flint Citadel Corps Community Center can have a more meaningful role, please get them to me. I am open to your suggestions. A gym program, an educational program for new parents, a way of reaching the community's older population... what ideas do you have???

    THANKS!

  • Thursday Afternoon

Well here I am after a long time away from my xanga site. We came back from Wisconsin after having a great time visiting with Brian, Katrina, Maddy and new baby Lydia. We also got a chance to see Jaime and Reggie.

The drive home was a little tough for the first couple of hours on snow covered and slippery roads. Then it was just rain the rest of the way home.

The trip to see family and a new grand child was definitely worthwhile. If you have already been bored with all of Peg's pictures, then check out the pictures on Brian and Katrina's xanga. (www.xanga.com/BKGoodwill)

Well I have to go and introduce our first session of Folk Art taught by one of our Social Workers for the Community Center.

    Bye for now.

  • Camping Labor Day Weekend

This coming weekend Peg & I will be going camping in Baraboo, Wisconsin. We will be joined by Jaime & Reggie and on Sunday we will drive to Wausau to attend chuch at Brian & Katrina's corps. Then we will look at their new quarters, go to lunch and all of us will return to our camp site.

We  haven't had much of a chance to use our travel trailer this year since I started working at the corps. It will be a great chance to get together with family.

Our first night out on Friday, we might stay in a Wal-Mart parking lot. I've heard that this could be fun, but without any electricity it could be interesting.

We are also working on getting things ready for Fall activities at the Corps Community Center. We are trying to get a computer lab established with six new computers and another half dozen used computers so that will be intersting. We need to hire a part-time computer lab coordinator.

We are also trying figure out about how to get an after school program up and running. In addition, we need to gear up for gym programs and other activities to be successful.

A new web site is under development. We are also trying so many new ways to involve the community with the Army in Flint.

Please keep our corps staff and our efforts in your prayers. We need everyone's support to get the community center functioning at full speed.

May God richly bless each and every one who reads my blog.
